Did you get a positive result on your pregnancy test? If so, your next step may be to have an ultrasound. A Hope Center offers limited free and confidential first-trimester obstetrical ultrasounds performed by a registered sonographer or registered nurse w/ training in limited OB sonography.

Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?

Believe it or not, a positive pregnancy test doesn’t mean you have all the information you need. An ultrasound will give you additional information to make an educated and empowered choice about your pregnancy. It ultimately answers three important questions:

  • How far along is the pregnancy?
  • Where is the pregnancy located?
  • Is the pregnancy viable?

How Far Along Am I?

Learning the gestational age will tell you how far along you are in your pregnancy. An ultrasound is the only way to get this information. It will give you an estimate of your due date. If you are considering abortion, the gestational age determines whether you can have a medical or surgical abortion.

Where Is The Pregnancy Located?

Most women would think this is a silly question, but there is the possibility that your pregnancy is not located in your uterus. Sometimes the embryo implants elsewhere. Most commonly, it lodges in the Fallopian tubes. This is called a tubal or ectopic pregnancy. This type of pregnancy poses serious health threats and must be attended to right away by a physician.

Is the Pregnancy Viable?

A viable pregnancy means a fetal heartbeat is detected. Approximately one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage during the first trimester. It’s possible that your pregnancy test came back positive, but your body may have naturally miscarried in the time between your test and your ultrasound.
